Just installed a set of new front wilwood 4 piston brakes on my 73 RR. The car is a factory front disc / rear brake combo. After I installed and bleed them the parking brake light would not go out.
Checking the manual I understood that there is a procedure of how to bleed the brakes and I followed it. Still the parking brake indicator light on the dash would not go out and after taking it for a ride it seems I do not feel the front brakes engaging. Feels like the rears engage only.
I know this car had a factory brake proportioning value with system failure indicator that's why the parking brake stays on.
I could assume that some air got into the system or dirt in or near the master cylinder or proportioning value.
Any help in diagnosing the problem and fixing it would be helpul.
Thanks to all.
Ralph

try a wilwood adjustable prop valve, is you current prop valve above or below master cylinder, you may need a check valve, try rebleeding the system and see what wilwood recommends also, i have the same brakes and i was told to use the wilwood prop valve

reach under the dash and pull the parking break release ... just joking hope you get it figured out :)

Did wilwood specify to use the factory proportioning valve? Your car had factory disc brakes all the way around? Those proportioning valves are designed to obviously work with the factory set up. With a difference in bore size via either caliper or wheel cylinder (drum), one would think the parameters for the the factory proportioning valve would be different than one needed to balance aftermarket upgraded brakes. I would pop the bleeders and re-bleed the front brakes.......If that didn't cure it, I would be changing to an adjustable proportioning valve. Good luck.

Thanks to all that replied.

I will check with wilwood to see what they think.

The emergency brake connection was checked and the brakes do not feel right as well.

I will also have a local mechanic rebleed to rule that out.

willwood disc brakes conversion

:headbang:hi Ralph ,did you install a 2 lb inline valve which will keep fluid in line causing your brake pedal to stay at proper position and your brakes will feel alot better ..There will be a hick up in your brake system until you do this .My Charger rallye has disc brakes on the front and I have since changed the rear drums to disc bought a brand new factory prop valve and i yet to get the 2 lb valve to make sure that the brakes stop properlly and safely. If i can be anymore help message me and i will help where ever i can

Residual valves are for when the master is below the wheel cylinders, in other words....frame mounted. An adjustable proportioning valve in the rear line should solve your problem.

residual valve ?

actually I was reading a new MOPAR mag and they were saying about cars that have been switched from disc/drum to 4 wheel disc this way your brake pedal is not on the floor and you are able to stop .They did mention the use of the valve when comverting to 4 wheel disc with the use of a external valve (adjustable) .....not trying to cause any problems i just researched to do this swap on my 73 Charger rallye ........take it easy .......

Not saying whats right or wrong, just going by what I know. Keep us posted on this, you got me curious.

checked with wilwood

Called wilwood today and they stated that since i had disc in front before that I should be good to go.

We came to the conclusion that maybe dirt got in the proportioning valve or air somehow - and yes the fluid was pretty dirty should of taken care of that first.

I plan on bringing it to my mechanic to rebleed the brake system and flush the lines - hope that does it.

Thanks to all - keep you posted

If that light is still on and the front doesn't feel like it's engaging, you don't have them bled well. It's that simple.
