8 3/4" yoke leaks

I have a small leak from the nose of my 8 3/4. I assume the oil is getting past the splines. It is a 489 case (in a Moser housing). It is a 1350 yoke. Is there a sealant recommended for the splines of the yoke? Thanks.

Stuff paper towels between the yoke nut and u joint to make sure that's where it's coming from.

If it is leaking at splines you can remove yoke, clean it and pinion well and use RTV on spline ends. Yoke wont come off easily next time though.

And the 489 case uses a crush sleeve on the pinion shaft between the pinion bearings. Some have been lucky enough to take the yoke off and put back on without replacing it. You "might" be able to get an inch pound reading on the rotational torque needed to rotate the yoke, somehow mark the pinion threads and count how many are hanging past the nut, take the nut off, do the deed, then back together. "If" you get it all back like it was before taking it apart, you're good to go. Me, I'd plan on getting a new crush sleeve and follow the procedures for setting it. There is/was an outfit that made a solid sleeve, think it was Ratech, that allowed you to use shims along with the sleeve to set the preload. But thats a whole different ballgame.

How do you know it has a sleeve or a spacer?

Lotsa hi dollar parts on that machine.

What about the changing pinion seal, regardless of the carrier number?

741 and 742 use shims between the pinion bearings. No issue there. Pull the yoke off, out with old seal, in with the new seal, yoke back on, tighten nut to ?ft lbs. Not so with the 489. Unless someone used the shim/collar deal. If still crush sleeve, roll your dice. Put a new sleeve in and set to specs or gamble and potentially kill the bearings or more.

Center punch the nut and the end of the pinion shaft, so the nut goes back to the same place.

I agree except I'd tighten a little more. If punch mark is at 2 O'clock I''d turn it to 3 O'clock. This will add a little compression to the sleeve. MO
