Can you check and fill the fluid on a 833 without pulling the trans? We have a 71 with a console.

The console has nothing to do with anything. The fill plug is on the right side of the transmission. Access is from under the car. Oil is filled up until it trickles out the fill hole. If you want to check the level, just pull the plug and insert your pinky.

Well, there's no dipstick obviously. The A-833's have TWO square-headed plugs. One plug is near the bottom (drain) & one plug is 1/2 way up the passenger side (fill). The "full" level is right when you're adding fluid into the side hole & it starts to drip out (car level).

The older transmissions were originally filled with gear lube & sometime (1972?) Mopar switched over to automatic transmission fluid.

Oh yeah, see 69roadr's post. You'll need a "manual pump" that they sell at most auto parts stores (or something similar). It sort of looks like a ballpark ketchup dispenser pump with a hose attachment. I've always filled up an old/dry antifreeze gallon jug with extra gear lube (hard to get it all out), jack the car up & pump it up into the side plug.

Actually, you CAN do it without a pump. I connected a vinyl hose to a funnel and ran the hose down the firewall and into the trans fill port. Might make a little mess when you get it filled and disconnect so just plan ahead.
