I just took down the high spots so it would lay nice and flat filled in the gaps with caulking, sanded the outside edges down, wiped clean, applied the silicone and gingerly put it in place. If I only had 400 bucks to refinish my front bench now!

love the wood to hold it in place.looks like a redneck rollcage in the makeing!

Something I learned from doing mine is the instructions make a mistake. They state you should only apply adhesive to the front edges of the cap, and not put any adhesive on the rear areas so the cap is mounted so solidly that there's no room for expansion/contraction, which can result in cracking. I followed the directions, and put no adhesive on the rear areas, but once it started getting hot outside, the area between where your clamps are in the picture started bulging up from the rear.

I fixed the problem by waiting for a hot day, then putting some adhesive under the rear of the cap (which wasn't easy to get it past the windshield), then put weights on top of the bulge to keep it flat while the silicone cured.

after think on actual cost vs final looks... definitelly decided will NEVER install a dash cap on my car.

Helped to couple of friends to install them, two diff manufacturers... both look awfull

preffer wait up to get $400 and get one redone. Carolinadashes on ebay is offering some good priced units on original cores and has been told they are really nice.

take in mind, the shipping price, specially overseas ( my case ) won't change a lot being the cap than the dash itself

juts my two cents.

It came with the car when I bought it, I've had experience with installing another one also, I love the way they look and for the price and budget I'm on. You can't beat it.

I had my dash cap on for 2 years, took my car out this weekend since it was in the 60s, crack right down the middle of it. I'm pissed, mainly because id rather have the original dash displayed if its replacement is cracked, but now that is ruined even more because of the glue.

Thats great if you only have the 1 car to do, but I cant spend $400-$1000 each on a dozen dash pads for a dozen cars. If I only had 1 I would spend the money on a pad.

Looks real good, I put one in my 73 and im happy with it so far..

well, if I had a dozen of cars, I think is because I have the money to restore them LOL, if they actually need to be restored.

and if not, making one at a time at the same beat I'm working on every car, will try to do it... maybe one dash every 6 months, if I don't have anything else to do on the cars of course.

I know is not easy ( you don't need to tell me how hard is... I'm overseas and you can't imagine how much money I have invested on my Charger getting everything from USA to my place, and money exchange is against me day after day ), but HELL... a cracked dash looks worst than a cracked seatcover, specially if you think a seatcover can be made locally anytime, and a dash needs to get the special tooling, so not everybody makes it, it will be my priority.

is juts myyyy opinion...

I wont say they cant crack pop up or anything else, i agree if you can afford a pad and its that important to you as these cars are to us then yes, buy a pad. But to be honest, ive never heard of one cracking and im not saying it doesn't happen, it wouldn't surprise me if it did. This first picture is from last summer, some time after i had put it in, the second just recently and still the same, outside of the dust, i could go out now and take a picture, but it looks the same now as when these was taken. For the price difference and what it looks like to me, i would do it again to my next car if they make one for it.

JMHO TO :)

I have one of these caps laying around. I test fitted it and it seems it would glue down good. The problem I see is where the woodgrain insert is on the right. I tried to install the insert and it does not fit. It looks like trimming is needed on the cap there. Theres no way I'm cutting the insert. Maybe heat might help, I'll have to try it. What did you guys do to make the insert fit properly? I dont think I'm gonna use it anyway. There are some things that be cheaped out on.

I just remember back to the 1980s when the only choice we had was using one of those horrible carpet-looking covers that made you use velcro tape to hold the carpet in place. My car looked like someone wearing a bad toupee! Even a cracked-up dash was better than that

You can also get them out of JC Whitney.. I bought mine from a guy selling them on EBAY but i didn't see them when i checked back looking for another for a member..
Thank You Ron you always come through.
