Put it on a 7" wide rim that has at least 4 1/4" backspacing and it will fit. If you use an 8" wide rim it will need 5+" of backspacing or you will have tire rub up inside the outer wheel house.
a spool on the street is dangerous,, u cant take curves with out rear wheels chattering and can cause axles to break,, get a sure grip u will be much better off!!
28 inch tall will fit but rub the rear of the wheel well upon any bumps....7 inch wheel works nicely but a 255 by 60 by 15 is almost the max...some have run an 8 inch with modified backspace on a 275 by 15....the cars don't like real wide tires....I have one...67 R/T
A P255/65x15 is equivelant to 28x10x15...the tire size the Original Poster asked about (Can one actually find a P255/65x15?...I don't know)
How tires are measured:
P255 is the width in mm (approx 10"s).
65 is what the percentage of the width the sidewall equals.
65% of 10"s is 6.5"s.
6.5"s x 2(top & bottom of sidewall) = 13"s.
13"s of sidewall + 15"s of rim opening = a 28" tall tire.
A P255/60x15 is equivelant to 27x10x15.
The (P255) width stays the same (approx 10"s).
60 percent of the width is 6"s.
6"s x 2(top & bottom of sidewall) = 12"s.
12"s of sidewall + 15" of rim opening = 27" tall tires.
The 28" tire diameter is only a half inch bigger than the P255/60x15 when measuring from the center. There is ample room for a 1/2" increase in diameter on my `66...which is the same as a `67. The problems most owners run into are from using wider wheels and not enough backspacing. It is a fine dance on the `66s & `67s when making a tire/wheel choice.
