Can start my 74 440 up, usually pump the hell out of if with choke closed, starts and will set and run good, can maybe drive 25 miles, shut off to get some gas and will not start again, finally run down battery trying to start, got a jump, pumped hell out of it and it started. got home, next day put new fuel pump, fuel filter and rebuilt my thermoquad . I have the same problem, finally got it started again and looked at fuel filter ( which is clear plastic) while it was running and looks like very little fuel flowing into filter, you can watch it flow or dribble into fuel filter. Rubber hose off of fuel pump up to carb except for about 1 foot of metal line off carb. Before I hooked up to carb, I cranked motor over and new pump shot gas real good across the garage. I am beginning to wander if maybe the rubber hose could be sucking together. if you think I need to check my fuel lines all the way back to tank. I have already replaced plugs, plug wires, module, coil pickup, thinking it might be electrical Then replaced fuel pump ,fuel filter. rebuilt thermoquad, and it doesnt do it all the time, only when you least expect it. any ideas, or suggestions would be appreciate. pissing me off..

Try checking how much fuel flows coming out of the fuel line at the sending unit, If you get very little flow try taking the gas cap off and see if it flows more. If that does not work check the sock attached to the inlet of the fuel line in the tank. That is about all I can come up with. Good luck and hope one works.

Did you ever try to use a gauge to find out the fuel pressure from the pump to the carb, on the downstream steam side of the filter? They are cheap. A crack in the fuel line, above the tank, could suck air without leaking fuel, maybe. Get 12ft of rubber hose and run it from the tank to the fuel pump if you suspect the line, as a test. Gotta be cheaper than throwing parts at it.

Found my problemm after plugs, wires, pickup, control box, fuel pump, and a new fuel filter, which is clear plastic , got it started and notice hardly little fuel running into clear plastic fuel filter. found hose from metal gas line which ends about under motor mount. This rubber hose was very soft, I could sqeeze it together with very little effort. replaced it, still hard to start. jack front up with motor running ad move metal gas line around were i connected the rubber hose, thought my clamp was not tight enough, and here is what i found. Hole wasn't that big until i took the buffer to it, this metal line had been rubbing on the K Frame for who know how long. believe I cured my problem, but was a bitch to find. Pain it the ***.
