Auto console shift knob removal

I'm having trouble removing the shift knob from my 69 Road Runner auto console. I removed the allen screw and when I try to unscrew the knob it just turns. I looked at the Service Manual to see if I was missing something, but it says to remove the allen screw from shift knob then unscrew button, spring and knob assembly from cable end and remove from lever. What am I doing wrong?

You turn all of it. the wood knob and all. Approx 3-4 turns and it’s off. The black button screws to the cable inside.

the knob has a raised rib that rides inside a channel in the wood ball so they all turn together.

Possibly the threads on the plastic button are stripped. Been there done that.

Pull gently as you unscrew the knob assembly - if the threads are stripped, pulling and turning at the same time will help.

If you pull up and unscrew they come off at the same time, and the spring may stay in place.
