Greetings,

I refreshed the fluid in my B-Body Dana 60. Do I need to add any special additive to the gear lube?
If so, what & where do I get this at? I kinda remember some kind of "sperm whale" stuff in a small bottle 30 years ago.

:thankyou:

Hypoid additive or whale oil suregrip additive available at the dealer is where I’ve always bought my stuff

Agree with the Mopar additive. I tried synthetic 80-90 wt years ago (no additive, bottle said it was not needed) and the dana was not happy with it. Clunk and snap noises while driving was not good. Drained it out and put in good 80-90 wt with the additive and it has been just fine for the past 15 years.

O'Reilly auto parts carries it. Should be by gear lube, or ask.

Sadly Ford's (Spicer's) works the best...
Plus it normally is more reasonably priced. I always kept a half dozen in the shop. I dont remember it smelling any worse than any other. Once its in and the plug is installed the odor is gone.

I had a friend (passed away) that owned a rearend shop. Used torco gear oil by the barrel. He would not warrantee anything if the customer insisted on synthetic lube.
He used and recommended the Motorcraft additive above. But he bled Ford blue, too.

Not sure about the other brands although I figure they will work, but the Ford friction modifier is also good for fixing torque convertor shudder and apparently a few other clutch issues in the newer automatic transmissions.I have fixed two different vehicles that had convertor shudder with it ,and a friend of mine has a Ford Escape that had erratic shifting problems that no one could figure out (including two different Ford dealerships) and I told him to try a bottle of the friction modifier and it cured it and it's been fine for over two years.
