Does anyone know, is there a difference between backing plates for 11 x 2 and 11 x 2 1/2 backing plates? I have a '69 Coronet RT I'm working on with a Dana 60 and just installed 11" backing plates but the 11 x 2 1/2 shoes don't seem to fit quite right. The only markings on the backing plate are an M circled on one side and an E and a 2 stamped on the other. Is this May of 1972?

in any regard, is there much difference in stopping power? Do I need to find other backing plates for the 11 x 2 1/2 shoes?

all advice appreciated!

I've been able to determine that anchor width I'd different between a 11x2 and a 11x2 1/2 backing plate. Does anyone know if there is a way to extend the anchor or possibly swap them out?

Does anyone have 11x2 1/2 backing plates for sale?

I would expect the 11x2.5" backing plates to sit deeper on the axle, in order to accommodate the wider shoes.

There is a difference, and I'm pretty sure it's with the anchor or the stamped feature of the plate itself. Before attempting a modification I'd look through pick N pull for some 70's era big boat. Those are likely to have the larger brakes.

It's not just the anchor. It's also the depth of the plate relative to the axle flange. It's not much different - 1/4" - but they are different. You'll know right away if you have an old shoe you can compare to. The tab at the top of the shoe will align with the top of the anchor if the shoe and plate match. If they don't, you have the opposite shoe or plate.

For anyone following this thread- dpstark2 is correct- I found this out the hard way. I bought a set of backing plates from a guy in Carlisle that claimed they were 11x2 1/2 b body plates. I sandblasted, painted and installed them only to discover that they were actually 11x2 backing plates. The shoes WILL mount to hem but they will slant in slightly since when sitting flush on the plate the top of the shoe will not sit on the anchor. Remember, it's only a quarter inch difference. I went to a junkyard and salvaged a set off a '69 Satellite station wagon. Sandblasted, painted and installed. Total lost time overall- a half day of work! Per-fit the shoe to the plate before installing! I now am working on getting the brakes bled, another struggle!
