Wife putting cayane pepper on plants in the yard had a Real scare! She hears a snort there's a bear 6' away. She turned around and hot footed it inside.

This is why the bear was sniffing around your house Fran.

They can be sneaky guys, for a larger animal
we have them too, so many dogs around here they sort of stay away...

Glad she didn't have a run in...

the pepper does work too, sort of
it's hit & miss here

sucks when they get used to humans, or lil' to no fear
those are dangerous, even the lil' 90#s

fruit trees, berries & garbage eaters mostly
seems like the same bears too
every Tuesday is garbage day

seems when the coyotes are around the bears are after a kill too
lots of berries & pine nuts around here, nice new green grasses too
'omnivores will eat most anything'

I saw a decent size black bear fishing, turning over rocks for moths
& eating bugs etc. in the creek Sullivan Creek, it's barely a trickle right now
about 100 yards down the street

we have a resident Moutain Lion (big male) roaming in that creek, like a hwy
seen it & it browses the trailer park next to it too, adjacent to the property behind me
those guys are really unpredictable & scary

the bears are easily shooed off, most are like around 200#s or less,
majority are subadults, garbage eaters, wondering, like the weight of a big dog
the bigger bears, are an issue

Coyotes are pretty sneaky too,
but don't really like showing themselves to humans here
keep the varmints population down too, eat turkeys & fawns too

the Cougars, seem to not care what or who sees them,
they are bold, always someone's cat or lil' dog goes missing here

I suspect it's the coyotes mostly, they den right behind me 100+ yards away
on like 45 open acres
but we found a few kills, with everything but the head & neck eaten
that's a Cougar trait

I thought you weren't supposed to run from a bear.
you don't want to turn your back on any predator if you can help it
make yourself look bigger, make noise, flail you arms etc.

except for wolves, (maybe coyotes too)
don't show them your teeth, that's a threat to them

when you run (sometime it's the best thing too)
you become prey, when your back is to them

learned most of that stuff when I lived in Alaska
or from hunting, being out in the woods in general

My step son lives pretty close to Fran, and he sends pictures of bears trying to get in his trashcans to my wife about once a month.

Tell him to spray garbage and can with stinky bathroom spray. As for taking pictures whole thing was only 20 seconds long.
I when she turn and took 3 step I was thinking bear. The bear came out so I could see him when wife 20' away. NO TIME for picture.

I don't blame you for no pictures. Protect yourself first, the hell with the pictures. The first thing I would pull out is the 38 I carry.

"Bear vs. Wife" ...Actually, when I read the thread title, I thought it was about your lack of clothing. And, the reason why she ran away, as well....
