hey guys, are the bigblock 833 4 speeds different from the small block ones? I know there's the 18spline and then the 23spline. I've got a 440 that i want to put a 4 speed behind it but two of the ones I've fount are hooked up to 318's. Need some help before I the wrong 4 speed. Thanks, Jon

18-spline and 23-spline, that is the only real difference. It's the bellhousing that is different. The transmission doesn't care what it's behind.

440's and Hemi engines came with the 18 spline trans but I've seen plenty of people use a 23 spline unit behind them too. The 18 is heavier duty but the 23 will take a lot of abuse too. 'A' body transmissions use the short tail shaft vs a long one for B and E body cars.

There WERE differences. Some of the early /6 and 273s had a 3X to one low gear, as did (at least some) of the OD units. I got into this years ago when "Advanced Adapters" used to make an adapter shaft to mate an 833 to a Jeep transfer case. Since the 3x to one low gear mainshaft is different, you can't use that box with the adapter shaft, nor can you use an OD gearbox.

There were minor differences over the years in gear ratios. If you Google, I'm sure you can find it, probably Brewers is a good shot.
