The car in ? is a 68 Coronet 2dr with a mild 318/stock 904 transmission with a 741 case 2.76 geared 8 3/4 rear. The drivetrain is getting a little tired and before I throw any money at it. I am torn and back and forth on what to do.
My goal is to have a little more power maybe crack into the 13s and run a no higher gear than 3.23s while obtaining okay mileage since I drive a lot and the car has manual brakes and steering. Previous owner ran a 15.2 at 92 mph with the small Summit Cam and Weiand 8007 intake and stock 904.

My first thought is to rebuild the factory #s drivetrain with KB167 pistons and use the LA 'X' HEAD (RHS/INDY 360X HEAD) from Hughes Engine along with a Whiplash cam. The 318 already has Summit Headers with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust and Dynomax Ultraflo Mufflers. The 904 would be built by CRT and get a PTC converter and low gearset along with a TF2 shift kit.

The other ideas are to build a 383/400 with aluminum dual plane intake and use the 600 cfm Edelbrock I have now or use a 850 TQ and have that built by Demonsizzler. I would run a Whiplash cam for sound and have the distributor curved. Everything else pretty much stock. This would be the same for the 440. The 727 would get the same treatment as the 904 I mentioned above.

My budget for the engine and transmission is 5k for both pieces. I don't want to build a stroker unless it is cheap enough but I would to have a halfway reliable engine with some decent power. I would like to hit 13s in the 1/4 mile and get at least mid teens on the highway and double digits around town. My car is a cruiser and I do drive it quite a bit so yes the mileage is consideration. The suspension is already setup for a B/RB but, the car handles great as is. I would like to do some street/strip time with it.

I would love to have a 440 but, not sure if I could do it for 5k for both the engine and transmission. The only cool thing about the 318 would be it is a small block that can get decent power. What is everyone's thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I say ditch the 318 completely and stroke a 360 to 408. Hughes Racing engines sells a cast crank kit that runs for 1500 bucks including balancing and rebuildable 360 cores are a dime a dozen. a TCI Streetfighter trannt runs about 730 and is fine piece capable of supporting over 460 HP with a nice shift kit and manual/automatic valve body. Throw some nitrous at a mild build on that stroker and you should be able to get into 13's easy depending on your rear gear AND do it for less than 4 or 5 grand depending on how much you invest in valve train. Hughes also sells a pretty sick top end kit for about 2 grand that includes Edelbrock magnum, a nice comp cam and an intake. I dont think you can really do a big block for less than five K and make the same amount of power that that 408 will have.

Thank you. I am now considering swapping in a 360 Magnum out of a truck/van into my car.

Nice some Hughes fans. I live 1.5 miles from hughes shop in east peoria il. Call dave he will hook you up. Theres no better mopar guy in my honest opinion. Get one of his port matched air gap f1 intakes too... They Flow great and look even better
