I was driving home from work today and thought I would start the 65 Coronet up just to hear it run.

I checked the oil/battery and put fuel in it. Got in the car and cranked and cranked and cranked. you get the idea. It sounded weird while it was turning over. I don't know how to explain it just didn't sound right. I tried again but nothing. I was turning over but wasn't firing. The only thing I can think of is when I put my Indy Inline intake on I had the distributor clearance issue. I had to rotate the distributor gear 2 teeth. Knowing my luck I messed it up and will have to try and fix that.

Not really looking for answers just venting because I am DIEING to hear the Dodge roar with the new intake on. Heck I wanted to pi$$ off my neighbors with the open headers. Oh well, I will get it going again.

HAS it started since you put the intake on? if not i bet your 180 degree out.

No. This is the first time I have tried to start it. I was thinking the same thing. It has to do with the distributor somehow. I just knew when I messed with it that I wouldn't get it right the first time. I will mess with it here soon.

ok take off drivers side valve cover and turn motor over till you get to TDC. Make sure both rockers are loose. meaning both rockers closed.
what i do is get your balancer set on whatever timing mark you want. lets say 35 degrees. put a 1-1/16 socket on your balancer nut and turn it with a breaker bar or xlong ratchet till you hit 35 degrees. Then pull off your distributor cap and make sure your rotor is on #1. turn distributor till rotor hits #1. tighten down your distrib. hold down. pop back your valve cover and fire it up. You'll be very close w/o timing light. And atleast it will fire the 1st time.

Thanks Chris, I will give that a shot. I have a few questions though.

When you say turn the motor over, do you mean by hand or key?
I had my timing set at 32* before so should I use the same again to start with? I turn the balancer and when the 32* mark hits the 0 on the indicator I stop; right? Do I mark the base where #1 is before I remove cap? I will also check the firing order just in case I didn't get that right.

When I turned the motor over(by key)last time to TDC the timing mark was at 10*. I didn't do the valve cover/rocker arm step though so I don't know if the valves were closed. I marked the #1 and then removed the distributor. I popped out the gear and rotated it clockwise 2 teeth so the cap hold down clamps cleared the intake. I bolted it back down and then moved the wires 2 spots so #1 lined up with the rotor.

Pull all your plugs... (The motor will turn over easier). Then use a long ratchet or breaker bar. While your are turning the motor over put your finger over the number one spark plug hole, as it comes up on the compression stroke you will feel / hear it pushing air out. NOW you know your coming up on top dead center so be looking for the 0 mark on your balancer. (You will know because both valves are closed so both the rockers will be loose). If your timing is set at 32 deg. then stop when the 0 mark on your balancer is at the 32 deg mark on your indicator.
You can't find Top Dead Center unless you got the plugs out or watch your rockers. TDC will be when the 0 mark on the balancer is aligned with the 0 mark on your indicator.
If you want to make sure you on TDC take a piece of wire and stick it down your spark plug hole and the piston should be at the top. If the piston is part way down the hole then you are not on the right stroke, that's why you want your finger over the hole.

Do I get both at "0" aligned first and then rotate the balancer "0" to the "32" indicator. Then mark the #1, remove the cap to see if #1 is in line with the rotor and if not rotate dizzy until they line up.

as you can see I have never set timimg on a car so I need set by step help.

Go right to 32 which i think might be too retrded since it hasnt been dynoed. im thinking 35 degrees.
pull cap and align #1 wire with rotor.thjat will get you close. but make sure you have both intake and exhaust loose on # 1 to make sure your at the right rotation.
