I am a civil engineer. A guy I went to high school with, one day told me don't stay with mechanical engineering, PHD's with that degree are pumping gas because the space program crashed. Get into civil engineering, there will always be **** plants to build.
Two years later I got an internship with a newly formed sanitary district. After graduation got a job as an engineer. Later got a job as an O&M manager. I had the best group of tradesmen. A electrical foreman that taught at the local tech school, one of the smartest I guys I ever knew. My machinist foreman knew more about pumps and bearings than any of the pump design engineers.
In my younger years my best buddy's were an auto mechanic, a carpenter, a machinist, a printer, and an accountant. I learned much more from the trades guys than I did from any of my professors in college.
We need to promote the trades, not liberal arts, political science.
