The '79 Cordoba's use common ground wiring, meaning a one wire connection to the speakers all around. Do any members have a one wire connection 5X7 [rear] or the fronts? Or an answer as to how to convert the one wire system to two? I have tried new two prong speakers using the connection car wire as the 'hot' and separately grounding the speaker to no avail. Help or suggestions? THX.

Are you using the factory radio?
I've noticed this type of grounding in a couple other places on Chryslers, usually with lighting. Its kind of weird genius, mad-scientist, engineers-amusing-themselves type of thing. I don't have a radio in my 76 anymore, but I've installed a system or two in the past and I'm thinkin' that A) you may have to ground the second prong to the speaker chassis or, B) the one-hot-wire system just might not work with aftermarket speakers. Stock-type replacements or a new head unit might be needed. That's pretty interesting though. I didn't know about the common ground bizness in the speakers before now. I played my cruddy factory radio maybe twice before it came out to make room for gauges. The speakers are still in there tho, I'll have to take a look at em.

Even though its a common ground system, any new speakers will need 2 wires. If you are using the factory radio you will need to ground the Neg wire of the speaker to the radio chassis. If using an after market stereo with a common ground wire system (make sure it is this type as you can damage the amp in the radio if it is not a common ground setup) then the ground for the stereo and speakers should all be in the same location ie all neg wires should attach to the same spot.
Now if using a common ground after market stereo with factory "one wire" speakers then the ground wire may need to be hooked to one of the mounting screws of the speaker frame as the neg side of the voice coil terminates on the frame of the speaker.
As always make sure that any ground connection made to the chassis is clean and shiny to form the best ground.

It is a MoPar stock radio and I find two wire speakers at the front dash and these at the rear...mad scientist's indeed! At the rear, I used the hot and grounded the two prong speaker to the chassis but not all the way back to the radio...just a new clean connection drilled and filled. I know the radio to be chassis grounded as well in the dash. No work at the rear. Do they still make speakers of the one connection type anymore? I'd buy two old ones to fit, just lookin' for a little noise...
