I have just joined and would like to know if anyone can give me an idea what the fair price of a 1972 440 steel crank, runs good, 68,000.00 original miles engine. I am redoing a 1969 cloned road runner.

Honestly, it really is a broad and wide answer. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than a grand. I would also assume that you're going to have to rebuild it.

A 72 would be a low compression motor with a cast, not forged, crank. If that will work for you, throw that info at the seller and try and get it for $500 or so. Can't hurt to try!

welcome to FBBO, I think the trucks still came with steel cranks in 72... Is it just the steel 440 3.75" stroke crankshaft or the whole engine your looking at buying ?

Welcome.
Actually 72 will still have the forged crank. Mid 73 the 440 went to cast crank. 340 went cast mid 72.

FYI
Just in case you don't know the difference but a forged crank has a thin (1') ballancer and a cast crank is 2 1/2 times thickerrrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks

Thanks to all for welcoming me to the site. I will get some pics out soon. Thanks for all the different responses. This motor is supposed to be in running order just drop in and drive. I also thought the steel crank was the better option. or am I wrong about that. This motor was supposed to have come out of a police car and is stamped 440 H.P. does this make any difference in the price. I am just trying to cover my bases. I have a 72 400ci in it now and it needs rebuilt. If this is a running motor that I can drop in I can't rebuild my 400 as cheap as I can buy this one. Plus i have my eye on a 53 dodge pick up I am trying to work a deal on and I would like to rebuild the 400 and put it in that.

I imagine the HP would make it worth a little bit more if that's what you wanted and were willing to pay for, but it's still a '72 as well. I would look at it this way.

I bought my car as a drive now, paint later car with minor wrench work needed. After replacing the trans, basically all of the suspension components, power steering, carb, oil pan and engine... Well, you get the idea, I got the idea that maybe I got fibbed to a smidge. I decided to replace the engine as rebuilding one with so many cracks that the previous owner had hidden was a waste of money.

I found a '69 440 HiPo that was in good running order, pulled it and dropped it in. Very shortly after, I discovered that I needed to replace the ignition system, then the carb and then to top all things off I now have to have the heads repaired. It finally burnt out the exhaust valve over the #7 Cylinder and I am just too tapped out at this point from everything else I've had to do. So I have to wait, in frustration, to save until I can get her road worthy again.

My point? There is absolutely no way you can tell without it being apart and having it checked top to bottom if you don't know enough to be sure yourself. You might get lucky, but if you're anything like me at this point, you might not. lol. If I was to do it all again I would only pay what I was willing to pay knowing that it would have to be rebuilt and hoping that it wouldn't. If the seller wasn't happy with that, tough and I would walk. Ultimately though, best of luck to you, really.
