Thinking about taking the wife and heading to Costa Rica in the Spring. I hear it’s beautiful but don’t know too much beyond that. Would love to hear some recommendations from those that have been. What do you say guys?

I have been told that it's as beautiful as Hawaii, without the long trip. A friend went and he enjoyed it, but he talked with another American couple there who were shaken down for 500 bucks by the local police.

Keep in mind that it is still a third world country.

Especially living on the West coast, Hawaii would be my pick. You can sight see to your hearts content, something you may not want to do in that country

My daughter spent two years there in the Peace Corps and wife and I went there for a couple weeks each year. She was in a little town called Islita off the Pacific coast. Many Americans live/retired there or have their vacation homes there (my info is a bit dated as I'm talking 8 or so years ago now). What I recall is CR is/was one of the safest countries to visit in the region; least it was then. Travel to the interior or from the major cities is ahh an adventure! My daughter suggested getting a 4WD rental and most rentals are manual trans and that was great advice lemme tall ya. The roads are unreal some are so rough, hilly, narrow, windy, etc. a stick was a must have. Some roads you only want to travel on at 20MPH. Beware of ******* crazy drivers including the bus drivers. The people were largely friendly; but a huge advantage was my kid speaks fluent Spanish. This came in real handy when I was pulled over by the police one time. At any curve ya might come upon a riderless horse or a 3-foot lizard. Gotta watch it driving. We were super lucky as my daughter became friends with a wealthy ex-pat and another couple who had a friggin dream vacation home - they let us stay there for free. The owner was a songwriter from Nashville. Geez incredible; one place was set atop a mountain with an infinity pool that they rent out through a local resort at $1500 a night! An unexpected bonus. I loved the area and adventure, the aura of the country kind of reminded me what it was like here 50 + years ago a relaxed slow lifestyle. The ordinary accommodations takes some getting used to. On a kinda funny note; when you use the toilet NO paper in the toilet mon! Ya gotta toss that into waste cans!

Thanks for this.

Uh, never mind.
I know Dennis - you were going to say stay in the US and spend my money here. I like experiencing foreign countries and cultures. It’s about the same flight time to go to Hawaii fr9m here but I looked for a bnb there and couldn’t find anything remotely in our price range with dates that fit what we want to do. Then I thought hey why not Costa Rica! So now I’m in the checking it out stage. Much less expensive and I know there are trade offs but I also want they experience there.... hell I’ve been traipsing all over Asia by myself I hope I can handle CR

Thank for this.
Sure thing; can suggest some areas to see and have tons of photos; one place I really liked was a hot springs spa with swim up bars (well I enjoy a few cocktails) and it was huge lot's of privacy if you prefer (like I do)...didn't want to leave that place. Some great food like fresh seafood I enjoyed. I have nice memories of the place and greatly appreciated the host families my daughter stayed with that took good care of her.

There is an underwater UFO base in Lake Cote, Costa Rica.

Anyway, I've heard from work associates that Costa Rica is beautiful. Similarly, I've heard that Grand Cayman island is nice.

Go visit SF, it’s a different country! Lol!!!

Go to Israel or Australia.

Wasn't a bad flight there, faster than we expected, we flew to Houston from our local airport and then to CR. My kids have been all over the world unlike their ma and pa. My youngest (who lived in CR) just got back from a friggin 30 hour trip and a 14 hour time difference to meet with some of her old PC friends. Not any trek I'm going to do at my age.

Yeah - I’ve been to SF enough times to know it qualifies as a foreign country alright - I just don’t want to fight with the homeless for room and board. That’s really “ turned”. Would rather try the real thing w/o all the other stuff

My wife and I went last year for a week and had a great time. Neither of us speak the language, but many of the locals knew enough English. I think the car rental was the most expensive part of the whole trip (got a great deal on airfare). Also, after staying in some pretty rustic places, we treated ourselves to our last night in the Hilton Garden Inn across the street from the airport outside Liberia. We did a loop from Playa Hermosa at the north end of the Pacific coast down to Samara, then drove inland to Nicoya and then back to Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport outside Liberia. We enjoyed the adventure. They have main roads which are in great condition and mostly everything else is potholes and dirt. If you plan to get off the main roads at all, rent a small 4x4 SUV. Also spring for the GPS, since a lot of cell phones don't work in other countries. The people were very friendly, there are street vendors and beach vendors trying to sell their wares but aren't pushy. Some of the parking lots near the beaches and even in the towns have a local guy that will ask you to pay 2-4000 of their colóns (3-5 dollars US) to watch your car for you. This is generally a good idea, we read before going, but I only remember one place where that happened and I paid the guy. There was also a police checkpoint on the highway once, but they just waved us through. It's the same as anywhere - including in the US: don't leave things in your car, don't flash cash around (use a hidden wallet or fanny pack worn in front), stay in well-lit, populated areas at night, etc. We spoke to a young (20s) girl who had traveled all over central America and Mexico and she said she felt the safest country she had visited was Costa Rica. Also GET YOUR CURRENCY EXCHANGED BEFORE YOU GO. There are exchange services at the airport and in the larger towns, but they charge a percentage, and it is sometimes quite a bit. Otherwise, they have good water, good food, great weather, scenery and low prices.

Just got back. Its a GREAT place BUT its stinking hot and humid - what do you expect that close to the equator !! What amazed me is the cleanliness of the cities and the people in general. Even the poor street vendors are clean and tidy. Spending US $$ can be a problem in shops because aren't sure of the exchange rate. Many won't accept it at all. Those that do will give you your change in local currency.

Did you go any special places? We’re thinking since we live by the ocean here that maybe in CR we want to enjoy the forests. We’re thinking 8 days is enough. Which was your preference?

Have a buddy that goes there every couple of years with his wife and girls. White water rafting, zip lining in the jungle etc.. never an issue.

Stephen Fry enjoyed the place....
