Anyone hear about this. Driver had a tire let go at 289 mph. He was evac’d to a SLC hospital with a broken pelvis and 8 broken ribs. Looks like the cage did it’s job.

There was another crash where the car went airborn at over 300 mph. That driver was also evac’d

Damn messed up that Daytona

good thing the guy lived, a little broken up
but he's still alive

If anyone wanted to send well wishes, both Lee Sicilio (Daytona driver) and Rob Freyvogel (driver of the crash I mentioned in post #2) are in the same hospital...

Fortunately they're both seeming to be mending. Lee has another Daytona as well, I'll bet he'll keep trying.

Glad to hear that they are on the mend. Sad about the loss of the Daytona.

I came across this thread looking for info on Lee’s crash. I hope Lee is doing better, but “glad to hear no one was hurt badly” could not be further than the truth for Rob. Although he escaped the crash without any bodily harm of broken bones, he is the only person in the world to have survived multiple lobe separation in his brain while suffering a catastrophic head injury. He was in a coma roughly till mid November. He made it home shortly before Thanksgiving, unable to talk, or move without assistance. He has since gone through heavy physical therapy, and as of early February, is speaking slowly, and walking with multiple person assistance. Crash analysis has shown he also lost a tire, most likely running over a lost Dzus fastener found at the last contact patch of the tire when it ruptured. Analysis also found the car was traveling at 660+ feet per second after passing two 1/4 mile flags in slightly less than two seconds. As for Rob, he will NEVER get into another Land Speed Vehicle. I hope Lee considers this as well. There’s only so many times your guardian angle with catch you.

Thanks for the update

The salt was real bad this year
with poor traction the spinning tire fails from wear in the center as you are only on a small section at high speed

On Rob’s car, the tire manufacturer thoroughly investigated and determined the tire did not blow due to centrifugal failure, side load failure or overheating.

What caused the failure as most I have seen is the center wear from spinning on the salt

Maybe billit wheels? Jessie Combs car had a wheel failure from hitting FOD
