Dana 50

Anybody ever bought a Dana 60 but it was a Dana 50 instead. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as 50. Looks just like a 60 in the back. Housing is a little smaller with no place for pinion stubber. 29 is stamped into housing, 60 would have 48 stamped in it. The ring gear in mm. Smaller pinion thus smaller pinion nut. 1 1/8 50 1 5/16 60, if I remember what I read correctly.
Any of y’all know if I can run this in a 440hp 18 spline he,I 4 speed car?
Any input on this subject greatly appreciated. May ride to axle guy tomorrow see what he can tell me.

Never heard of a 50 before. I’ve seen Dana 44s. I’d bet it’s good for the hp you want but might be a pain when you need parts for it. I’d try and find a 8.75 or a 60 if it was me. I think Dana made the 9.25 in Chrysler’s too.

From what I can find the 50s were build for ford trucks ----- FRONT AXLE
of course you would know if it was a front axle. Maybe some sort of military axle
Lots of military stuff can have weird spec numbers.

Take pics of the cover and axle tubes by the backing plate. 9.25 Dana’s taper there.

The 50 is a front axle for a ford. I had never heard of a 50 until I started trying to figure this out. The housing has been made into a perfect b body but I won’t have a snubber. The pinion will be smaller as well. Will take more photos tomorrow. Thanks for the replys.

The 50 is supposed to be stronger than 44 yet weaker than 60. Ford used them to replace 60 in some applications but went back to 60 in the bigger truck. The 60 is 9.75 the 50 is 9.0 I’ve got my 8 3/4 in there now.

I looked it up. It’s a Ford only front axel. Kinda strange. The gears are cut weird too.

I’m just afraid to run it Bobby without a pinion. We got a rear axle guru everybody goes to in Huntsville and see what he thinks. Hensley built my engine it shows no mercy to rear axles.

Tommy, some jeeps used them and IH scouts, it's a good rear but I wouldn't trust it behind a 440. Dave

I don't run a pinion snubber. For a drag race application, the proper spring package is the key. On the street the snubber keeps the U joint off the floor pan on big bumps. I'd sure go with a 60, heavy but they don't break & parts availability is great.

I’m gonna go 60. I bought the real good springs from Eaton I’ve been real pleased with them. Thanks for your response.
