I have a 62 Dodge Dart 330 /6, auto. I have just replaced the
alternator due to dying battery all the time.
Tried the old trick of removing the positive cable to the battery
and the car dies with a new alternator installed.
Does anybody have a clue what else it could be?
Any help would be grateful.
Bill

Check the voltage regulator.

There are a number of things to check. If you have a volt meter take a reading across the battery at idle, it should read 13.5 volts to 14 volts depending on ambient temp. Increase idle speed to about 2000 rpm and take voltage reading should read the same 13.5 to 14.5 volts depending on temp. If idle reads 12.5 volts you are not charging at idle, either do to alt speed or regulator output. Make sure batt cables and battery post are clean, oxidation can keep the battery from charging. You can also have your battery load tested at your part store. One othe check to make is checking for ignition off draw, if you have an ammeter disconnect the negative cable and put the ammeter in line + side on the cable and - side to the battery neg post, make sure you have the meter setting on at least 10 amp scale and make sure no doors are open and all acc are off. You can also use a light probe with ground clip to batt neg and probe to neg cable if it light you have a draw on the battery disconnect each fuse one at a time to see what circuit is drawing down the battery. Whew that was long!
