Title question is self-explanatory (I think).

I've always wondered this myself, although with all the satellites and roadrunners I've seen in farm fields, ect. over the years, I've never seen rust in that emblem area...

It drains.

I know this because the sheet metal nut that was holding my emblem on was rusty as all hell!

That's interesting, because I see some 1971 emblems for sale have a gasket, which one would assume would help retain the water. I don't know if the 1972 emblems use a gasket or not. But as Dangina said, we don't see any rust throughs.

Much like the callout hoods. Those pockets hold a lot of water, but it usually disappears pretty quickly.

I don't think they actually thought about the possibility that water might pool somewhere and cause rust.

I have found that it only holds about a table spoon or so. Mainly because it has a downward slope so it only pools a little water at the front.
