Emergency brake pedal problem. Side to side play

Hello and happy Friday to everyone. I just got my parking brake pedal assembly installed but sometimes it grabs and sometimes it doesn't. I can jiggle the release handle and maybe push the pedal to one side or the other, as there is some side to side play, and then it will catch when I depress it, sometimes. When it does catch, it holds well and releases fine. I think the handle return spring is ok as it is there but it is missing that plastic bushing. Is there another spring somewhere that makes the teeth engage more positively? I'm not sure if the side to side pedal play has anything to do with it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
