Good morning. I recently purchased a restored 1968 Plymouth GTX and have been looking for engine and transmission numbers to see if it's a numbers-matching car. My son have crawled around the top, sides and bottom of the block and haven't found a string of numbers that might indicate if they're the original components. Might someone be able to offer suggestions and/or photos on where we should look for these important numbers? Thanks.

driver side, behind the valve cover, look on the rear lip of the block where it meets the transmission, if an automatic. You should find the last six or 8 digits of the VIN there. it is rough in appearance, but if original, you should see it. look just opposite of the oil sending unit, which is toward the passenger side.

my #matching 68 road runner only had last 4 of the vin on the block lip by the oil sender area, 4spd I think had last 6 of vin.

thanks. so, if I have one of the 68's that did not get stamped, am I out of luck in trying to confirm if it's matching numbers or not?

If the build dates of the engine and transmission are BEFORE the scheduled build date of the car, THAT also counts. Some '68s got through without the partial VIN; but since that stamping was a Federal requirement starting with the 1968 models, that did NOT happen very often, and is extremely rare. Automakers would get fined for each occurrence, so don't think for a moment that a missing partial VIN on a '68-newer engine or trans was commonplace...it certainly was NOT.

Look at the date on the pad to the right of the thermostat housing. D440Hp, then a month/day number. if it is before the build date of your GTX,and close, then it likely is original. Three digit number bottom right on fender tag, then match it to the date on the pad. Not perfect, but it will help.
