FBO timing plate question

I just picked up an FBO timing plate for my 69 Coronet. I’m running a reman points distributor with a 15L advance plate and a Pertronix Ignitor. Not that it matters, but it’s going on a 451 stroker. My question is, the FBO instructions state the number of degrees on the plate indicates CRANK degrees. Yet wouldn’t the factory 15L plate translate to 30 degrees crank? I’m currently at 14 initial due to the cam, and I’d like to be around 34 total. My thought was to put the FBO plate at 10 (x2=20) to get a total of 34, but this contradicts the FBO sheet. Anybody have input here? The FBO plate only goes up to 18.

When I put the plate in my distributor, I used the number 14 slots, I set my timing to 20 degrees initial and that allowed it to run to 35 degrees total timing. I wasn't going to complain about a 1 degree error.

Do they have a help line?
I think when you install it, you can eyeball check if it looks correct?
Checking with a timing light will tell the truth.

It seems that it is exactly as instructed. The plate is labeled in crankshaft degrees. Not distributor degrees. With your 14* intial you would want a slot for 20* to get your total 34. Looks like you’re going to have to bump initial to 16 and use the 18 slot to get your total 34*

Nope the factory slots are distributor degrees. You get 30 crankshaft degrees from them.

a 15 factory slot will only give you 30 crank degrees maximum, the plate will not add to that just limit it.

“Only 30 crank degrees”? Thats a hell of a lot. It’s putting me at 44-45 total right now. About 10 degrees too much. That’s why I am going to try the plate. If the plate doesn’t put it where I want it, I’m going to have to go back to the “old” way of welding, filing, and measuring the slots.

Or let @HALIFAXHOPS play with it for you and enjoy the downtime working onsomething else

The plate will fix your issue. No need to weld the slots. That's the purpose of the plate...to limit the advance to the number on the plate. The initial timing may have to be a few degrees off to get the perfect maximum timing. 68-500 covered this above.
