Hey guys. I purchased my first mopar (and first muscle car) about 6 months ago. It is a 1970 GTX, in ok shape. I bought it part way through a restoration someone else started. I'll have pics, and lots of questions, soon.

very nice car. the 70 is my favorit year of the GTX and road runner!

Pictures

Here are some pics. Yes, that tiny garage is really where I am working on the car. I am moving in the spring, hopefully to a place with a bigger shop.

I have the steering gearbox out right now, I am replacing it, along with the inner tie rod ends and coupler. Those are the last of the old joints up front, so hopefully that takes car of my sloppy steering prob.

I also have the interior out, I am redoing some of the work done by the previous owner. Luckily I bought the car with most of the new parts I need, I just need to install it correctly, rather than the way it was done. The hidden parts of the car need to be clean, too, in my opinion. I have a feeling the car was assembled in a hurry to sell it faster (there is red paint showing through between the window and interior trim...it's amazing what some people will try to rush).

The paint looks much better in the pics than it actually is. I'm hoping the body work is ok, but the paint seems to be cracking as if it were mixed wrong or did not adhere to the primer. There are large, spread out cracks that are probably 1/16" wide, but they are smooth underneath, like maybe i'm seeing primer in the gap? THey showed up a few months after I bought the car. So, it looks like I won't get away with the barnyard paint job as long as I'd hoped. The car was originally red with black stripes, but I think I'll keep it black, maybe with flat black hood striping.

Eventually I'd like to install a four speed, or even a tremec five speed, but I hesistate doing that to a car that is somewhat rare. It is not a numbers matching car though, and I have virtually no history on it. I have a 440HP in it that I just had rebuilt with a mild cam.

I am also in the process of redoing the dash and instrument panel. The car did not originally have a tach, has no spedometer cable, and the oil pressure gauge is fried. I may be able to fix the gauge, but the fried wire inside is extremely thin and delicate, not even sure where to find it. I am considering replacing the whole intrument panel with something custom, but not damaging any of the stock stuff, in case I ever to decide to go back to original. You might see the template material for a new custom panel in the floorboard, I think i'll try it with some 12ga steel, cut the gauge holes, paint it, and see how it looks. If I like it I'll spend the big bucks on auto meter gauges.

Sorry for the terrible pics. Once i get it rolling again, I'll put up some better angles.

Great car - I'm partial to 70s as well (as you can tell).
