Fix the original tach or go aftermarket?

I have a basically stock 68 Charger R/T with a tic toc tach.

After kicking around FBBO reading about tach updating/replacing, it seems that most people find that the original tach is, at best, sloppy and mildly inaccurate. Mine is just plain not working (none of the gauges are, except an amp meter); it seems like the most common fix is simply the cable. I have zero experience with gauges, their inner workings, or fixing them. Right now I don't much care about originality, but I do care about cost and I just want to get on the road and know what RPMs I'm at.

Should I just fix the original tach (this seems like the cheapest/easiest)? If so, should I start with the cable? If that doesn't do it, what then?

Should I just get an aftermarket? If so, which one?

There is no "cable" that goes to a factory tach. It's all electronics, just buy an aftermarket if you don't care about originallity. If you cared about Originality put a new board in the Tach. If your speaking of the Speedometer then yes that uses a cable which will cost you under $60 to replace.
 
$400 to fix the TicTocTac. That's why I have the SunPro strapped to the column. With a rusty hose clamp in honor of Galen Go V A.

get an inexpensive afyermarket tach while you fix the original. Getting the original to work would be a real plus for the value of the car
 
If the gauges are not working, why don't you fix that first? It sounds like the instrument voltage regulator may be bad, no it is not chrome and on the firewall.
 
Voltage limiter. There is is no voltage regulator at instrument cluster. Have talked to many who have sent the factor tach for up dating not very many have been happy with what was returned. I run both factor that is only accurate under 2000 and aftermarket.
 
I like the original tick tock tach. I had gary "the tach man" redo mine for electronic ign. Also he puts in a quartz movement for the clock. Has run perfect ever since.

Very few of my gauges work either so this winter I'm replacing with new autometer cobalt gauges. Have them sitting on shelf just waiting to get going, new carbon fiber dash panels too. The old ones are not very good. My car isn't original so I wasn't worried going in that direction.
 
Good replies. These websites are so weak; some of them are broken AND hard to navigate. But the products seem pretty good. Seems like somebody with website building knowledge could do some good/make some money here...
