What is everyones thoughts? I replaced the rad, t-stat with a 165 one and unhooked heater core. Still runs hot....

I'm on the fence IRT flex fans. I've had them on different cars, and never had an issue with them. They've kept the engine cool, eliminated vibration from clutches starting to go bad, and freed up some HP. But I've read lots of stories of where they've come apart and done some damage. It's never happened to me, but I guess it does happen.

I was thinking of putting one on my '74, but what worries me now is I have less and less confidence in auto parts with each passing day. Would the fan I bought today be as well-built and dependable as the last one I bought in 1985 or so, or would it be a piece of Mexican or Chinese crap that lasts two months?

Ditch the flex fan. Have you tried the Mopar Viscous fan? It does the same thing without the danger of throwing a fan blade through your face. I have two of them but one I am going to remove the five blade fan and put the 7 blade fan on. That will be a coolin mug.

I quit using flex fans back in the 70's. Seen more than a couple come apart.
Mopar stated that a clutched Visious fan providied the best cooling using the least power. GM knew this too. Also why use power to spin the fan when not needed such as at highway speeds?

I just want mine to idle on a 100 degree day with out overheating. My buddies General does it and it has a 440. Hell he idles it every year through the cruise for 4 hre with this A/C on!!!!!!

Maybe it's the chebbie hugger orange paint.

do you have a shroud around your fan,can make a big airflow difference at idle.put up a pic if you can.

Step 2. Get something done with that funked up gnarley *** radiator. See that green stuff on the front of the core? It's toast. Only a matter of time before it springs multiple leaks in that area. It's rotten as hell. When the metal gets like that, it's ability to dissipate heat is severely affected.

I replaced the radiatior, thermostat and water pump, thanks. Oh, still hot on a hot day. Even has a 165 thermostat. Tried a 185 and 195 as well. The shrouds don`t appear to amout to much, but will try it....

I've used all kinds of fans (except fiberglass) over the years and never had a problem with any of them including flex fans....but I also don't pull 80 lbs of torque on the 4 little *** bolts either! If you use a flex fan with an aluminum hub, use washers on the danged thing! I see so many who bolt on aluminum intakes and other aluminum parts and never even think about that. The biggest killer of any fan (other than steel) is over torquing them and not using washers. I also use a minimum of 1/8" thick hardened washer for all aluminum parts.

im not a big believer in fan shrouds....all they do is keep your fingers from being sliced off! i dont have one on my stock 383 or one on the hypo'd 440...both run at 190-195 with 190 t-stats.

Fan shrouds WORK as evidenced by their use in pretty much every car from the factory. If the manufacturers didn't think they needed them, they wouldn't be there. Proper use of a shroud and a fan that is placed correctly in it are primary concerns when trying to diagnose cooling problems. Almost every conceivable situation has been covered in this forum and a search will give you lots of info.

For the OP: What is the reason that your vacuum advance unit is plugged? Again, a search on this forum will give you some great info on reasons you should use it. Cooling is one of those........

I ordered a new Mopar performance electric ignition kit for it as the advance is shot. I did not know that would make it run hot. Thanks so much for that info. I have tried the search feature but don`t quite have it figured out yet.

aw bullshit flex fans are not junk. espeacially the flex-a-lite fans
With a flex fan it is just a matter of time before there is radiator, hood or both damage. They are junk, get rid of it quick.
