My Superbee had a NOM 440 in it some time ago when I got it. It now sports the correct year 383 and the same 4 speed trans and bell housing and fly wheel which were mated to the 440. I went to install a mini starter last night and it seems the fly wheel sticks down to far and wants to be to deep into the starter where the starter gear would hit the back of the fly wheel. I also tried a stock starter I had laying around. My question is..... Is there a difference in the 440 and 383 fly wheels? I think not. I'm afraid I need to drop the 4 speed trans and change flywheels.

As a follow up - 11" bell housing and 11" Centerforce clutch and pressure plate. Very frustrating.

11.25" fly wheels?

I wonder if I have an 11.25" fly wheel? Is there such a thing?
Does an 11" clutch and pressure plate fit an 11.25" flywheel if there is such a thing?

See how it's just about 1/4" to big?
I know I have 11" center force clutch, pressure plate (verified) and bell housing and dust cover for fact based on Brewers Performance measurements of 10 5/8" from center of the left dust cover hole to the center of the right dust cover bolt hole on the bell housing and dust cover.

Was there ever a working starter on the car?

My though also. Change the bell or change the flywheel.

I think I have an 11 1/4" fly wheel and it needs to be an 11".

143 tooth flywheel in a 130 tooth bellhousing?

Bell housings came in a 10 1/2" or an 11" per Brewers Perf. Mine is an 11".

I'm thinking I need a new flywheel.

I don't recall a starter on the car when I got it 5 years ago.
This may be why it sat in 2 different garages for over 30 years.

68 and 69 came 143 tooth flywheels and bell housings. i believe all others were 130 tooth. there was a 130 tooth that took an 11" "scalloped" pressure plate in 1970 and may have been in later years. never heard of an 11 1/4" flywheel. yank the trans and get a number off the bell housing. i think you need a 130 tooth wheel and 10 1/2" clutch, or the 130 tooth 1970 wheel with the "scalloped clutch. call brewers.

My Bell housing is 11". My clutch is 11" After speaking to Brewers again today, They think I have an 11" fly wheel, just the wrong tooth count which widens the OD. Someone told me (Maybe Brewers) Hemi's had 11.25". I cant remember who told me.

Starter shim missing?

If you go to brewers sight and look at the bellhousings you will see there are 10.5 and 11 inch bells. 10.5 uses 130 tooth flywheel. 11 uses 143 tooth except for the hemi 11 inch bell that accepts a 172 tooth wheel and direct drive starter. You need to get the part number off your bellhousing.

Believe the bell housing for 143 tooth where cast iron from the factory. There were also cast iron 130 tooth bell housings for the 10" clutch. 72 was the first year listed for the 130 tooth scallop pressure plate with 11" clutch and aluminum bell housing.

I think it's more of a shield than a shim. Seen them on some cars but not on others but in this case, ain't no kind of a shim going to help fix the problem that he has.

Bell housing Numbers.jpgI have an 11" Bell housing and 143 tooth flywheel. I pulled the trans this morning and counted the teeth. My Bell housing is cast iron. Heavy Mofo..

My casting numbers are 2892626
Date 2/28/69

So now what.. Grrrrrrrrr. Hopefully Brewers answers my email on Monday. I sent pictures of everything.
They have already seen the problem pictures.

Does the tooth count on the flywheel have any impact on which starter to be used??
God I hope not.. or maybe I hope so, So I at least have an answer and can just feel like an ***.

The teeth on the flywheel dont hit the starter do they? It all turns over by hand ok right?
Just for the heck of it i would engage the starter for a second, ir juat the solenoid (the small wire to the starter) without the big wire hooked up. To be honest i never looked at the starter to ring gear closeness. It may surprise us all and mesh like its supposed to

I did not do that. The dash and harnesses are not in the car, but I guess I could run a wire from battery to the solenoid.
That would be fine to.. but it appears as if the starter gear would just slide up and hit the back of the fly wheel. The trans is out of the car....sighhhhhh that was the first half of the day...
