On my 74 charger se 5.9 360, I found the fuel oumo under the alternator but where's the filter at and is it an "in-line" type? When I was trying to crank it, there was no fuel coming thru the line in front of the carb.

Disconnect the line at the pump and see if you get any fuel there. May be a bad pump or you may not be getting any fuel from the tank.

Could be all of the above. It could be a blockage in the tank, could be a stoppage in the line, could be a failed pump, or it could be a clogged filter.

I would disconnect the feed line to the filter and see if you have any gas. If you do, then the filter is clogged and needs replaced. If there's no gas, you need to check the pump.

Pull the pump and make sure the lever works, and attach a vacuum pump to the line and see if you can pull any fuel. If you can the pump needs replaced. If you can't there's a problem in the line or tank.

At that point you can pull the tank end of the line and see if you can push air through it, but at that point, you'll likely have had to drop the tank anyway, so might as well check/replace both.

The filter will be an in-line model located between the pump and the carb.

Make sure you use a quality, all-metal replacement as intended. The plastic and glass bodied filter housings can melt or burst easier and cause a real problem in a hurry.

What Montclaire said about the plastic (can melt) and the cool looking glass filters with chrome ends (can break) is true,, Makes for a robust fire! A lot of guys have learned the hard way about these types of filters.

The factory filter should be near the pump...a clogged filter can prevent fuel from getting to the carb but since there is no filter, the pump should have no problem with flow....unless there's problems upstream or if the pump is bad.

Does there need to be a certain amount of fuel in the tank before it would crank? There's bout 3 gallons in there now.

Noticed this mornin this when cranking, there fuel that leaks out of the bottom of the carb. Is there just a paper gasket there?

You mean it leaks out of the bottom of the carb itself or it leaks between the carb flange and the intake manifold?

When my cordoba's fuel pump failed, I found my filter, tank and old pump full of rust. I flushed tank, blew line out from tank to pump, new pump with filter in front of it, and a plastic, see through filter from pump to carb(advance auto). I am using this to monitor fuel contamination from the rusty tank. I replaced the filter 3 times...based on the condition of the transparent filter. Now, the fuel is clean and I put a traditional metal filter in. Hey, 3 clear filters is a hell of a lot cheaper than a not needed new tank. umm.. try to find a new 26 gallon new tank for a 75-78 b body.

How do u fit the in-line filter between the carb and pump? Any pics? Also, is there an upgraded fuel line I can get that goes between the carb & pump?
