Alright, after fighting with fuel issues for a few weeks now I decided to stop wasting time and replace the gas tank, Sending unit and main fuel line. Fuel filter constantly being clogged, and today left me stranded. The tank is nasty inside, looks like the ocean floor ! My question is, do you guys just install the tank as you receive it or give it a quick layer of undercoating ? I know all of the rust is on the inside, but the bottom half of the factory tank that I removed was undercoated. The tank is from right stuff detailing.

I personally would just install the tank as is for a variety of reasons. Foremost is the fact that it's unnecessary. The tank will 'sweat' as the temperature changes and it's probably not a good idea to trap that moisture. Also, consider that the tank was probably only coated on the bottom, where they could get to it, and it still lasted over 50 years! Besides, if it's new don't you want to show it off to the people you leave in the dust?

Buy a stainless steel tank, no more worries.

I thought about it, but I already did and spent way more than I had originally planned. Not in the mood to spend an extra $100 for the stainless. Besides, If i can get another 40+ yrs out of a regular steel one why bother !

I recently picked up a nice 64 Dodge that has had quite a bit of work done including a new tank installed. They did install a bare tank no costing and it looks nice. However I do have a related question. My tank is quite loose. It moves up/down on the side with the fuel sloshing around. It's actually quite annoying inside as the metal on metal noise is bad. I see there there is only a center tank strap. They did put the pad between it and the trunk pan but that doesn't help. The tank strap at the rear is as tight as can be, actually ran out of threads. Anything else I can do? Add a second strap? Maybe the strap I have is to long or bend out of shape now. THanks for any help.
