I will turn 59 next month. This is the first post I have made to both FABO and FBBO (I usually pick one). I have fond memories of the ‘70s through the ‘90s, as I suspect many here share. I find myself going to the FABO and FBBO sites reminiscing those glory days past; not just with the cars, but old ads, pictures, and stories. I’ve owned over 20 A-bodies, a half dozen B-bodies, several C-bodies, a few trucks, and 2 Ramchargers (roof comes off) that were purchased for a pittance compared to today’s prices. Of course I could call out some of the spectacular ones, and I had more than one desirable car given to me for free — back in the day. In all, I have owned well over 60 vehicles, and less than 10 were not Chrysler brand (GM, Ford, AMC, Subaru and VW).
When I bought a ’72 Dart Swinger with the deluxe cloth interior, 318, 904, lighting package, PS, PB, AC, and vinyl top (and other options) with very little rust for under $100 dollars, it was just a junk used car. The same car now would command over $6k easily! I bought my ’73 Road Runner, 400, 4-speed, console, full vinyl top (side stripe delete), Strato-vent for $650. Lord knows what it’s worth now. There was the ’71 Duster Twister retrofitted with a ’69 340 and 4-speed for $1000; ’80 Ramcharger 318 4-speed 4X4 for $1800; ’72 Duster, 318, deluxe cloth interior, console A/T, AC, PS, PB, lighting package, and more that was given to me (Petty Blue to boot) for free. Golden Nuggets!
I have to come to terms with the fact that there are still Golden Nuggets, just not those of yore. You can get 20 - 30 year old Mopars for under a $grand every day of the week. Considering inflation, that would be like under $200 40 years ago — Golden Nuggets.
I’ve been married for over 30 years. I’m still madly in love with my wife. However, our bodies have aged, and I’m not capable of performing the passionate intimacy things I did 3 decades ago; nor is she. I could reminisce over the intimacy of 3 decades ago, or realize very few people are still madly in love after 30 years. Again, a Golden Nugget!
I am a history buff and have concluded that the Roman Empire was a glorious time to be alive. It is gone, and will never come back as it was. It had numerous Golden Nuggets. The ‘70s were in some ways a glorious time that will never come back; music, cars fashion… Yet the ‘70s had rampant inflation, sky-rocketing gas prices, and political scandals. Still, there were these Golden Nuggets many of us seem fond of.
I suppose I’m posting this more for me than for you, as I need to look around and appreciate the awesome things I now enjoy. I can’t possibly enjoy every Golden Nugget from every year of my existence simultaneously, but I need to let go of yesterday and appreciate today. Golden Nuggets are still here today!
