Got me a hood scoop.. how do I put it on??

I purchased a sled city max wedge hood scoop and I need to know how to figure out the placement?Anyone have any measurements as to placement on the hood? I run a single carb and I also wanted to know the best way to cut a nice clean hole in the hood?

Well lets see what others say but I was told 3" from the back edge of hood, and thats what I did.

As far as the hole I used an electric saber saw with a good metal blade and had no problems.

Lay it out...........look at it..............think about it for a while.........look at it some more........go over measurements again...................look at it............and then cut. LOL



Oh and I went about 1 1/2" bigger than air cleaner I think.

I think the hood scoop is 1.5" off the back lip of the hood IIRC.
3" is too much.

Ahhh, says SUPERSTOCKRACER who ownes the car he posted pictures of.

Placement will vary depending on the induction system you have.

Not sure of the exact measurement of my scoop but mine isn't 3". It is more like 1 1/4" - 1 1/2". It isn't very much.

Couldn't you:

Put a string across the cleaner post from the cowl to the front of car and make a tape mark where the center is. Then run the string across the car(fender to fender) and make your mark. Take the cleaner assemble off put the hood on. Cross section it with the strings and that should be your carb center. Now make a circle about 1/2 bigger or so. The hole will be to the pass side about a 1 1/2 - 1 3/4. Center the scoop on the hood(not the hole) and bolt it on.

Am I way off on my thinking?

Not sure on these wedge scoops but the hemi scoops are more like 1/2 to 5/8" off the back edge. Aside from the distance what I wanted to say after having just installed a scoop is not to just measure the back. Chances are the scoop is not perfectly symetrical itself. Measure your back for starters to get it square back there but then also come around to the front and measure the front (distance from the sides and front edge). A string does work good. Also when you drill the holes drill them out a size bigger than your bolts. That way you have a bit of wiggle room.
I made a cardboard template of the bottom side of my scoop with the holes and used it to layout and drill the hood.

Well I wished I would have thought about this idea when I cut my hood for the air cleaner hole. Mine isn't so perfect but maybe I could do it now and fix it up a little.

You also have to keep in mind the offset of the Mopar BB motors when you layout the center hole. If you want to keep the center hole centered you will have to make it a lot larger in OD to allow for the side offset. On the 1962 hood, the circle formed by the underside steel frameshould make a good starting point.

Also what you can do is put a pc. of threaded rod in the hole for the air cleaner so it just comes up to the top of fenders, put a dab of paint on the top of it and gently, slowly lower your hood till it meets the threaded rod with the paint and then you have the center you are looking for for the hole in the hood. Drill a pilot hole up through in the center of the paint mark, then you can use a compass, string, or whatever you have to mark the full circle for the cut out on top of the hood.

After looking at that wedge scoop - another thing to consider if you make a cardboard template. Make sure you "flatten" the scoop out like you will have it on the car to get the right spread on the holes.
