The answer I was always given was "Nothing" ...it just sounded cool and up-market at the time.
 
Gran Turismo Luxury was the definition. It was known as the gentleman's car, but people speculate on what the x was for.
 
It was billed as a Junior Executive's Hot Rod in the day. .... or the Thinking Man's Muscle Car. :headbang:
 
According to Jack Smith, the father of the Roadrunner and the head of the Plymouth Intermediate Division at the time, the GTX was a direct rip off of Pontiac's GTO badge, which is what the GTX was built to compete against. He said the "X" was arrived at using a logical though process, but I've never heard what that was. And just for the record, Pontiac stole the GTO name from Ferrari. :)

GTO stands for the Italian designation Gran Turismo Omologato (Grand Tourer Homologated), so if GTX means anything it would be Grand Tourer X.

At the start, the Roadrunner and GTX were polar opposites. The GTX was designed to be a high-performance/high-end trim car to compete with the GTO. The Roadrunner was a high-performance/ultra low-end trim car designed to put high-performance cars into the hands of kids who couldn't afford the GTX, which is why the Roadrunner trim was so bare bones.

This did change in 1972 when the decision was made to end the GTX as it's own model and make it a Roadrunner variant. If you bought a Roadrunner in 1972-1974 with a 440, it was a Roadrunner GTX.

but the GTX was better "X"
GTX, a "one up" on the GTO
