I've just put my heater box back in after doing a seal kit (65 Coronet - non AC). I've rebuilt the vacuum switch with new sliders, sorted out the wiring and figured out the vacuum hoses, none of which were connected. Everything seems to work quite well which was very pleasing.
I couldn't decide which way round to connect the heater hoses. Forum info is contradictory and the picture in the service manual is not clear and it does not have a description.
I connected the hose nearest the block to the heater core tube which is nearest the passenger side. I connected the hose nearest the fan to the heater control valve.
I've read that logically the water pump outlet should go to the control valve.
Which is the pump outlet? Nearest the block or nearest the fan? I thought is was nearest the fan but when I had the engine running up to temp the hose nearest the block definitely got hot first.
It seems to be working as it is but I just wondered if it made any difference.

Just need to get a new heater control valve cable now. Trying Rays Auto Air and Heat. Anyone know of an alternative?

Thanks
Les

It does not matter as far as I know. It will work either way,but may not be factory correct. Dont know what you want.

Not true. If the pressure side is connected to the outgoing on the heater, the hot water will still get into the core. So that's why the pressure side from the engine has to go to the inlet side of the heater core with the cutoff valve, then no hot water will get into the core.

service manual will have the hose diagrams there...and it does make a difference what hose goes where

It does matter that the hoses are connected correctly. The heater core and valve are designed to work best flowing the correct way. If the hoses are crossed it will probably work ok, but I've seen it cause weird problems too. Had an old Belvedere in the shop with a fairly loud clicking noise under the dash after a motor swap. The noise was coming from the heater valve. Swapped the hoses to the correct side. Problem solved.

Thanks for replies.
So I need to figure out which is the pressure side from the water pump and connect that to the control valve. I thought this would be the hose with the fitting nearest the fan on the water pump but the other hose gets hotter more quickly. That's why I think the hose fitting nearest the block maybe the water pump outlet.
I'll double check and I may even whip off the hoses to see if coolant only flows one way.
The diagram in the manual is no good and besides, the pump is not standard so the water may flow differently.
Cheers

non-standard pump is not gonna change flow direction. You never did say what engine you have. On a big block, the hose nipple closest to the block is the outlet to heater. On a small block, the nipple that is in the intake manifold is the outlet to heater core.

The heater core inlet is the nipple closest to the passenger side fender if your core is on the passenger side of engine compartment

Maybe this will help....look close at the arrows. section 24 pg 75-80

Quick update on this.
I disconnected the heater hoses at the bulkhead and dangled them into a bucket. After the engine was started, water pumped out of the hose connected the nipple closest the block. I have therefore connected this hose to the control valve. This means hot water will not go through the core until the valve is opened.

BTW - the cable that I got from Ray's Auto Air & Heat is excellent quality and works a treat. I custom ordered a 19" cable but I think the standard 18" cable would just about fit.

My wife was pleased with the extra inch though! Ha ha!

That's good to hear!!
