Hi all,
As the title states, I need some opinions on cam choice. I have already talked to Lunati and Comp and have their recommendations, but they seem to be a bit different so I thought I'd ask around since so many on this site are running 500" motors.

I am planning the engine build, and here are the specifics: 440 block .30 over. I am yet to decide between a 4.15 stroke and 6.76 rod, giving 493 c.i. or 4.25 stroke and 7.1 rod @ 505 c.i. However, I think cam choice should be the very similar or the same between the two.

The heads will be 84cc Eddys, so I will have around 10.8:1 or 10:1 static CR depending on stroke kit. The rest of the build is a straight axle 2% altered 62 Belvedere, approx 3400# 2x4 Holley 600's on a tunnel ram, 2" primary fenderwell headers, 727 reverse manual, 3500 stall, 3.91 sure grip. 28" tall rear tire

The car will be 75% street/25 track. I want to use an off the shelf, mechanical flat tappet cam

Here a a couple I am looking into:

Lunati suggested the #60343 259/267 on the
Duration @.050, .586/.606 lift, .016/.016 hot lash, 110/106 LSA/CL.

....Comp suggested #XS282S 244/252 duration .520/.540 lift @ .050 110/106 LSA/CL (seems a bit small?)

It seems to me like a pretty large difference recommendation for the same setup.....Lunati also has a a cam a step down, a BIT more similar to the Comp XS282S , the #60342 251/259 on the duration @.050,
.566/.586 lift, .016/.016 hot lash, 110/106 LSA/CL

Anyway, from what I have researched, these strokers can take quite a bit of cam and still idle like a kitten. I don't want to make the mistake of undercamming . I want something that is going to be aggressive enough to make strong midrange power and have a somewhat mean sounding idle. This is a weekend car/drag car, not a daily driver....nasty is good. I also need somewhat of a vacuum signal down low to keep the speed of the intake charge up in that tunnel ram.

Anybody who is running a solid lifter cam in their stroker please chime in and help me make a good decision on this. I am also open to any other suggestions or recommendations!

Thanks in advance, sorry to be so long winded but there is a minimum amount of information to get across when talking cams.....:thumbsup:Thanks

I built a 493 for my street/strip 63 Sport Fury and it is 99% street as I only hit the track 2 or 3 times a year. I ended up calling Dwayne Porter who owns Porter head service and he has built alot of Mopar engines including some of the engines for the FAST cars and done the heads for most of the FAST cars. He speced me out this solid flat tappet cam : 264 & 270 @ .050 with .592 lift and a 110 LSA. I use 1.6 rockers for .630 lift and I installed it on a 106 centerline as they recomended. I love it as it has nice rump rump to the idle which is what I love and it works great and has very good low end. My 63 goes 3700 lbs and I race it as I drive it thru the pipes on pump gas. Best et so far is 10.76 @ 124.49. If you would want a cam speced for your eng and you want to talk with Dwayne just let me know as I have his phone #. Ron

When I built my engine I fitted the comp XS290S camshaft, one up from the XS282S. The idle was pretty rough with just 9" vacuum and it didn't like to cruise around town below 1600rpm. My car is a 4 speed so maybe that cam would have been better in an auto so the converter could soak up all the kicking and bucking at low revs.
After a few years I'd had enough of it and swapped it for the MP 528 solid and I'm glad I did. The engine now idles with 15" vacuum and I can cruise around town at 1000rpm if I like. The 1/4 mile times were unchanged after the cam swap but the car feels much stronger on the street.

Thanks Ron I have looked over a lot of your posts while researching and it seems like I am building something very similar to yours. Your cam has even more duration @.050 than that bigger Lunati they recommended, so at least it seems like I am on the right track with that one. Also I am using 1.5 rockers so there will be a bit of a difference there

Shoot me a PM with the contact info Thanks!

What displacement is that engine?

bump...anyone else? Not that I don't like the responses so far, but I would like to hear more opinions/options. Who is running what in their 500 inchers? Thanks
