Hi FBBO,

My son is working on his 73 Road Runner. It has a 340, 727 and power steering and brakes.

His power steering box was sloppy and beat up, so we pulled it out and replaced it with a remanufactured unit. After replacing it, the steering is "tight". When driving the car, the steering wheel has a tendency to stay where it is. As an example, if you make a turn, the steering wheel will not slide in your hands and automatically center - it has to be pulled back to center by hand.

What could this be? I was thinking that it could be the sector shaft adjustment. We tried adjusting that, but all that did was put slop in the steering - it did nothing to "loosen" the steering and allow it to center.

Here comes my dumb question: It looks like the worm shaft adjustment is only done on the entire shaft when removed from the steering box? The instructions I have read state that worm shaft should be adjusted first and then the sector shaft. How do you adjust the worm shaft?

Any thoughts or help to fix this problem would be appreciated!

Answer. Firm Feel. Stage 2.

As an update, I found the worm gear adjustment - now I am just looking for a castle ring tool. I saw that you can use a large set of slip pliers, but there isn't enough room to get in there...
