On a couple of occasions, I've noticed that I'm getting some kind of hesitation or power loss when shifting to 3rd gear on hard acceleration. My fuel pacer light also comes on when this occurs. I don't think the fuel pacer system actually retards the throttle does it? It comes on when I step on it.

Otherwise the car runs and drives great. I've just noticed this happening about three times now...and only when I step on it heavily. If i go easy, so that the fuel pacer light doesn't come on, its not a problem. Not sure if its a carb problem, fuel issue, or trans. The engine does not "race" when this happens, it feels like fuel flow is getting interrupted or the throttle is being forcibly pulled back. So I'm leaning towards carb/fuel...but it only seems to happen when moving from 2 to 3rd...and only if I'm accelerating hard.

Any thoughts?

I don't know what a fuel pacer is, but it sounds like you may be getting shift overlap - the second gear band hasn't released when the third gear comes in. Effectively you're in two gears at once. It's probably the kick down band if this is the case. For a 727 transmission it's supposed to be tightened to 72 inch pounds and then backed off - two turns for most years. You can google or youtube how to check it for your 904.
