High Performance Fuel Filter Dilemma - Help!!

I have a street/strip 69 roadrunner (434 hp at the rear wheels/ over 600 hp with nitrous) and I'm currently using a Fram canister type fuel filter with my Mallory 140 electric pump. I have experimented over the years with mounting locations of this filter and pump but I'm really limited because I do have the factory tank with a 3/8 pick-up in place. I recently removed my fuel delivery system from the inner passenger side frame rail and relocated it above the rear axle housing pinion because I was planning on installing tail pipes. This location is forcing me to prime the fuel filter after long periods of the car sitting and not being started. The Fram canister filter has the fuel inlet and outlet on top and the mounting configuration of the filter requires the fuel line from the tank to be much higher than the Mallory fuel pump. I feel if I install an inline filter and relocate the Mallory pump on the shock mount bracing in front of the factory tank the pull (strain) would be alot less than the current mounting location and maybe it wouldn't loose prime. I would like some recommendations for some good inline filters and/or if you think this is a solution to my problem. Thanks to all for a great web site!!!
 
It sound like, You just need to have the pump lower... I have my canister filter up by the factory drivers side exhaust pipe hanger mount about even with the pick up nipple & the electric pump down low by the frame rail on the passenger side, with a 3/8" pick up sending unit also with #6 line & A/N fittings running all the way forward to a bypass style regulator & a return line back to the tank & I never have to prime the car even if it sits for a month... I also have a complete full 3" Flowmaster exhaust system installed out the rear in the factory locations...
 
I'm sure I do need the pump lower as it is almost even with the pick-up nipple. The canister fuel filter is at least 6 inches above the pick-up nipple. It seems like a long pull especially with the factory style pick-up inside the tank. I have them both mounted onto a piece of 4 inch angle iron that is bolted to the area above the axle pinion. The pump will be somewhat lower if I move it down to the shock mount brace but the Fram canister filter will still be way up there. This is why I thought the in-line filter would be a great idea because it would afford me the option of mounting a filter really low. But as you suggest, maybe I should go down lots further with the pump. Could it be my pump is getting weak? It holds great pressure once it is primed. It is feeding a Holley 850 double pump and I do have a regulator with bypass line.
 
I would do both lower the Fram canister filter & the electric pump lower in the car, the hose feeding the canister filter, could go up & over to clear stuff, but the canister itself needs to be lower also, or at a minimum even with the pick-up nipple point, it sounds like it may be just draining back to the tank or it's possibly a weak pump & location of the filter & pump... I would move both down below the pick-up nipples point, just route a longer hose to get to the filter first, then go down to the pump, it will make it easier to draw fuel that way... It only needs to draw fuel thru the inlet hose above the nipple pick-up point that way.... Good luck, with you project...
