A few years ago I saw on a very well restored '70 'Cuda, a semi-spherical rubber 'bumper' fitted neatly on the end of the hood release spring. It looked the part, although I have never seen another anywhere on any model of car. Sadly I didn't get a picture of it, however it was shaped to self-clamp on the tip of the spring, and prevent paint damage to the top fill panel where the hood catch bolts up.

My question is; Has anyone else seen these, or was it a one-off purpose made item by an over cautious car restorer/owner? :)

...I have no idea where the car ended up, as my friend who owned it became very ill, and was forced to sell his toys a few years ago.

I've never seen one, but when I did my restoration, I put a patch of clear bra on the area of the hood where it contacts the release spring to keep the paint from chipping.
