I'm hearing the weird rattle/bell ringing sound. First I thought lose tranny inspection plate. Nope, so I take off the shaker. Louder, really a strange ringing noise. I feel my valve covers, definitely right side. Of course shes parked right next to the wall.
Pull the cover.... sho nuff, there it is. How the hell did this break? Looks like it was spot welded. I have no way to repair this (???) I'm thinking going w/o will make for lots of oil everywhere. Hmmmm ... Any ideas? Can I buy a single cover? Any new gaskets tech that I don't need to RTV? I laid it back in the cover so you get a general idea. Thankful nothing else looks damaged. Over 40 years in automotive, this is a new one to me.

With the dents I have to assume your rockers were hitting it and made it come loose.

Well that sucks. I think Id bring it to local weld shop might be they could put a couple tacks on it and might not hurt the chrome? Worth a try.

May have got dented after coming loose and hitting on the rockers?

I believe it came lose, got wedged, then rockers hit it. Never a noise before, had it about 20 years now. Weird either way...

Welding will leave blue marks in the chrome, guaranteed!

Let's see it positioned properly in there.
NM, I see it

Grind the chrome mating surface and have it spot welded. It's been some years so I would guess it finally vibrated loose.

You'll probably not like the looks of the repaired valve cover. I'd spring for a new set, unfortunately. The other side will possibly have the same issue.

JB Weld?

The chrome will be mildly tarnished by spot welding. If it bothers you, have them rechromed or powdercoated black wrinkle. New repros are going to have the same tiny little tag welds as these ones did anyway.

no big deal , pull all that junk out , I`ll take it ...LOL

Wonder whether soldering it on would wurk and not mess up the chrome to much.

You could drill a couple small holes and use chrome cap screws with a little sealer. Would look better than burning the chrome off.

I had the same problem, covers were chromed, after rust had set in, junk. The valve covers were so out of shape, plus hydrogen embrittlement from chroming, and not aircraft quality chrome. Wall hangers for me. I bucked up, Ray Barton covers, made baffles and welded in, made stove pipes and machined and welded in, powder coat wrinkle black. Cosmetic gaskets. Not cheap, but gives you all the room that you will ever need for rockers and valve springs. Yeah, expensive, but they look and work great.

This is not a rust issue. Crappy spot welds is my guess. Yours sound really nice. Really dont want that big of a project tho
