If you have run or if you do run a spool now on the street ,do you feel it's worth it.I have a complete 489 case with 4.56 gears but the spider gears are welded up.I don't think welded gears are all that safe.
A spool would be the strongest and cheapest way to go.
On the street it might be a challenge to drive to say the least but........................what do you think??????

It will try to "hop" around a corner with a spool. If your carrier is an "open" one with the spiders welded, then bust that all out, and install one of the locker setups in that carrier

I run a spool on the street. On a sticky street tire it makes the car lean on slow speed turns and winds up crooked when you park in a parking spot and you have to back up straight then pull back in straight to unload the axles. If its on a regular radial then no worries, it will just squeek around turns. It will drive like a normal car in everyday driving. Spools get a really bum rap about being streetable, but my experience has been great. If you are going to run a sticky tire just know that the money saved by going spool you will give back as the rear tires wont last very long. Regular radials will last a long time. Hope this helps.

I run a spool and 456 gears. I don't have a problem other than the tires are so close to the wheel wells that the tires stretch and rub a little when I turn hard.

1badstroker,
Cool coronet \\\ The rear is going in my 67 cuda \\ 318ci
The car is turning out pretty good, but it is all the parts i have had over the years from racing my coronet small block.Trying to save money and only spend it where it's needed.

So you guys are saying that running spool is ok for everyday driving? Is it safe? Doesn't it increase your turning radius? How about in a panic situation? Is it hard on the axles?
Someone mentioned that running sticky tires, they won't last long. Is that because of the traction? Inversely, running radials, they will last longer. Is that because they "slip" more? Then what's the point of the spool if you have to run tires that are limited on traction? Personally, I think I will stick with my Sure-Grip, I suck at parking as it is without having to back up several times to unwind my axles.......

I have the same dana and spool in my junk for over 20 years:grin:It is rough on the front end with sticky tires. And if you have to push the car you'll need extra hands if you have to turn the steering wheel, forward is no problem.I would not reccomend one in a daily driver, mine is street driven 2 to 3 thousand miles a year and 3 to 5 days at the track.

I love that car. The pic with the cruiser behind it. Classic.
