Hey guys. New to the site. I have found a 1965 street wedge four speed Coronet. That's the good news. It's a two owner car in need of total resto although it's in pretty good shape. The second owner bought the car and never transferred the title and removed the VIN tag to keep it from being stolen. He did this with a bunch of cars and kept them in his file cabinet. The fender tag is still on the car though. The problem is the title was lost in a fire and there is a whole box of loose VIN tags and he passed away years ago. One of them goes with this car. The original owner does not have any original paperwork and there is no old registration in the car although there is an old license plate still on it from when it was last registered in his name. So no one knows what the VIN is. Can he ask for the DMV to do a search and get a lost title without knowing the VIN? Or where should I go from here? All I need to find out is what the VIN was and dish that corresponding tag out of the box. Thanks.

Jeez that's a bad situation, depending how old the plate is you might be able to run it and get the info. Other than that I don't think there's many options other than decoding the vin plates individually to see which one matches the car.

Well the original owner is still living and is willing to help. The title was never transferred out of his name. He has looked for months for anything with the VIN on it but has had no luck. Can he apply for a lost title not knowing the VIN? There records probably don't even go back that far. I don't know.

You could start by sorting the vin tags by the date

The back seat has been pulled and fuel tank dropped. No build sheet so far.

They have been found in the backs of bucket seats and on top of the glove box liner

if only the SO# , the fender tag, or the hidden numbers provided help in these old B bodies. It would make life much easier. None of it connects to the VIN so how in the heck was it supposed to help with theft?

Were all of the vin plates 1965 dodge coronets?

You're talking about the vin plate inside the door on the hinge frame?

I would create a vin that would have the correct series of numbers, and match it up to what you have. Process of elimination. In my state they have a copy of every title Presently in my name, no matter how long it has been since it was registered. It can't hurt to ask your original owner to have a search by name?

Try to match the first four numbers with these. The first three might be W15 or W25

I'd also suggest 62-65mopar.com

The first few digits should be W451 I am pretty sure it was built at Lynch Rd. as it has numbers stamped above the second line.

Yeah it's a 500. Bucket seats, console shifted four speed, etc. It's a big box. I don't know where many of these cars ended up. Probably crushed.
