How to tell a power from a manual steering column? Can anyone help with the lengths?

Hi all,

I have a lead on a local floor shift steering column that's claimed to be from a power steering 66 300.

How do I tell if it's a power steering column?

And will it fit? The owner claims that it will and I know quite a few pieces interchange but thought I'd better double check.

Cheers!

A manual steering column is longer than a power steering column Malicious. I'm sure someone around here could get you a measurement, don't have one off the top of my head...sorry.

Look for a power steering unit next to the water pump and on the steering gear box a power unit would have two holes for fluid lines.

Thanks Propwash, I was pretty sure one was longer, couldn't remember whcih was around though. Was the length difference just in the spline area or over all?

Thanks for the reply BigMan, but I'm just trying to tell the difference between the columns not installed and without the steering box.

Can anyone help out with the exact measurements?

PS please excuse the subject header, I posted from my iphone and predictive text is a POS.

Hi All,

Just found a post that shows the Manual column exposed shaft at about 7.5" and the Power exposed shaft at 4.5". Thought I would add it head for the next person searching. Photo ref is here:

Also found out the 66 is a non collapsible column among things, to I'm going to steer clear -ba-dom-chish! Again for prosperity, 67-69 are the same. 66 non collapsible and possible different overall length. 70 had a different shaft or something? Could be compatible, but do some extra research first.

Cheers for the help FBBO!
