hurst competition plus shifter stops

if I follow hursts stop adjusting instructions seems to me the tranny is taking an internal pounding that may cause damage. anybody experience problems with this? cause if I push handle all the way into 3rd and run bolt down til it contacts stop then back it out a thread the tranny is becoming the stop not the shifter. any info would help me clarify this issue
