Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss has died after a battle with cancer.
Spokesman Bob Steiner says Buss died Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He'd been hospitalized for cancer, but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure.
[h=3]IN MEMORIAM[/h]We remember those who have died in the sports world in 2013.
Buss, 80, had not attended any games this season after being a fixture in his luxury suite halfway up the arena behind the Lakers' bench. A Depression-era baby, he was born in Salt Lake City on Jan. 27, 1933, although some sources cite 1934 as his birth year. His parents, Lydus and Jessie Buss, divorced when he was an infant.
Buss maintained an extremely low public profile last year, emerging briefly to release a complimentary statement about Derek Fisher when the longtime Lakers guard was traded in a rare cost-cutting move in March.
