I currently am using the 1 piece kick down linkage and want to change to the 3 piece. Engine is a 440 and the transmission is a '72. Do I need to replace the lever on the tranny or are they the same?

If you are going to be using the early year 3-piece kickdown linkage, yes you will need to change the trans lever also for it to fit/function/adjust correctly

I have to wonder what are you supposed to change it to? I've only ever seen one type of kickdown lever for the 727 trans. How the lever/linkage from the carb connects to it varies, some go through the lever and are held in place with a cotter pin and some use a clip that connects to the lever) but the lever has always been the same.

There are numerous 727 trans levers that were used through the years. Here are a few examples. It is not only if it connects with a pin or a clip. There are different offsets, lengths, and most importantly, shaft clocking differences, which make a great difference in correct adjustment.

Right, they are different lengths, but they are all the same design. They all connect to the trans the same way, and they all have a hole in the end for inserting the end of the kickdown lever. How the lever attaches varies, but the design of the lever is the same.

Yes there is only one way they connect to the trans, and they have a hole in the end for connecting the down rod The pics show you some of the different 727 designs, which as i tried to explain why that matters but maybe you missed that in the pics or my previous post. The flat spots in the center of the bolt end on the levers control the clocking when the lever is installed on the valve body stud which also has a mating flat spot. This position of the lever makes a great difference when the down rod is installed for length, clearance and adjustment. The lengths and offsets of the various levers will also make the same kind of difference when connecting the down rod so you have the correct length, clearance and adjustment
