Our female ten-year-old French poodle "Bonita" has taken over the watch dog duties since our female five-year-old Doberman Pinscher "Camelia" won't bark when someone knocks on the gate. Not only that, when a stranger walks on the property, Camelia quickly sits down about 15-20 feet away and offers a raised paw to shake hands.

Just saw an old film on youtube "The Man With My Face" (1951) where the bad guys use a Doberman to confine/guard people in a locked room and to murder selected people in public places. In the final murder scene, you could tell the Doberman was actual playing with last person killed, not trying to rip him to shreds.

This week Camelia began another phase of walking around with a ball in her mouth and whining/crying without any apparent reason. She also began to eat only half of her daily portion of dog food. She also has dug a couple of giant holes in the yard. She goes through this pattern of behavior every so often. I have not been able to pin it to anything specific yet. This has gone on sporadically for a couple of years now, I guess. I'm not concerned, she always gets over it eventually.

She's bored

I have had two Doberman's. They were both big love buckets!

My Rottie, Kola, goes threw a "phase" 2 times a year, (during heat cycle) where she carries a stuffed chew toy around, like its her baby, for about a week, then for 2 or 3 days, she will sleep with it, and guard it.
Not a very intimidating thing to see, so much for the big bad rottie, lol!!
I think its called nesting, she also has had 2 false pregnancy's.(Vet said common with this bred)
I wonder if the ball/whining is a similar thing with, Camelia's heat cycle?
My Rottweiler, has never gotten it on with any dog, and she still ended up with the false pregnancy's. She is now just 4, and last heat cycle we had Kola fixed so she may no longer have this happen.

She just completed her "bleeding cycle", which went on for weeks and weeks. Little stains all over the concrete areas of the back yard. Never heard of "false pregnancy" before, but that would explain all of the current symptoms.

The last time Kola had her cycle, she developed pyometra, that led to us having her fixed.
Vet told us under certain circumstances, pyometra can lead to very bad things, so by having her fixed it wont happen again.

I think the two breads are related, they have very similar markings.
thats why I though maybe Camelia's carrying the ball and crying, was similar to Kola's "nesting" behavior, as my dog does same thing, only with a stuffed chew toy.

I have a 120# pit Mastiff mix he is about the most docile dog I've ever seen he looks like a big bad *** but he only barks for dinner and if he hears a bang or something outside he runs and hides!
My pit hound mix she is my guard dog now she's 79# and she sounds so nasty but if they were to come in she would just want to play with em . My old pit used to be a good guard dog but at 14 years old now he doesn't care .

My best was my 55# cur pit mix I had to put him down he was extremely aggressive to everyone but me and I guess my wife some times . She got to the point where she wanted him to go to work with me . He broke a window on my house trying to get out to get a raccoon (witch he got and killed)
When baby was on way we decided it was just not safe enough to keep him and no one else would take him . He was an *** hole but a very loyal dog (to me)

Not sure is you guys have this issue, but my Rottweiler growls and jumps at the tv, all the time. Its gotten to the point I have a squirt bottle to get her with, its very annoying.

No reaction to the TV screen, unless there are cat noises coming out of the speakers, then one or both dogs tilt their heads one way and the other way to locate the source/direction of the "animal". But this only happens randomly, some TV cats don't provoke a reaction. I have never been able to predict/determine when the dogs will react to TV sound bites like cats.

Its funny cause if a commercial has dogs in it, she will start to stand at attention as soon as the background music plays, before any dogs appear, like she has them memorized.

Sometimes I'm glad I have prairie dogs lol

This is Bella Luna or as I call her, the big stupid. (my other dog is the little stupid.) She barks at anything and everything, thunder, people walking down the road, mailman etc. We always know when someone is around with her big deep bark. She's not much of a people person though.
