Wow I know a guy that had it done, a while back now, he had to have 6 months of rehab & it was brutal, but he swears it was totally worth it now, he's back out golfing, running & motorcycle riding, so it seems to be good... I wish you all the best... I hope you have great insurances...
like cranky says, if you are much over weight i doubt they will do it. but that being said, an older friend of mine lost a bunch of weight and had both done about 6 yrs ago. he says he should of had it done yrs earlier. i had a bad accident 8 yrs ago and had my hip replaced twice in one year. there were people in the same ward for knee replacement and they said having the pain gone was worth the operation. they were up and walking in rehab on the 2nd day. good luck. rick
I had a total hip replacement almost 2 years ago (just before I turned 47). It was my first surgery of any kind, and I'm glad I did it. I know a knee replacement is much more complex to come back from (the only real rehab for the hip is to walk a lot) - but if you stick with doing what they tell you, it'll be a success. It is true - you'll wish you had done it sooner. Good luck.
My sister and BIL both had knee replacement a few years ago. They both swear that it was the best thing they had done.My BIL is overweight, but still gets around a lot better than before. As someone else mentioned, they said just getting rid of the pain made it worthwhile. Now, if they could only fix my back!
I had both knees replaced at the same time in December of 2001. Two surgeons one for each knee working at the same time. If you need both done this is the ONLY way to do it. Mine are still working well. Some suggestions.
1. Get an easy chair and build a 12 inch high plywood box and bolt it to the chair. That way you don't have to struggle to get out of it, instead you drop down to the floor. You will probably sleep in it for a couple of weeks because your knees will hurt like you can't imagine.
2. Take your pain meds on time whether you think you need them or not. Don't let the pain get ahead of you as it will take a long time for the pain meds to once again get ahead of the pain.
3. Get a solid wood 30 inch tall bar stool for in the shower because you will not be able to stand up for even a few minutes without lots of pain. They will tell you not to shower until the incisions heal, but I could not go without a hot shower in the morning so I wrapped my knees in Saran wrap. Worked like a champ.
4. ALWAYS ice down after your PT. DO NOT skip it even if you think you don't need it. I skipped it one time and had to be physically hauled out of WalMart on one of their powered chairs because my leg muscles froze up.
5. Don't allow your physical therapist to get soft on your PT. While you may only need 110° of ROM (to negotiate steps) the more the merrier. I have 135° and can go up and down steps like a normal person.
6. VERY IMPORTANT. GET A ANTI-SKID PAD FOR THE BATH OR SHOWER. DO NOT STEP INTO A SHOWER OR TUB WITHOUT ONE. One slip and you are screwed for life.
