Anyone ever have lifters that pumped up and shouldn’t have?

I bought a setup from Hughes and I’m running into issues. I bought their HyLift Johnson fast bleed down lifters and ‘matched’ valve springs. Long story short, I just ran them at zero lash and no float. With even .0125” preload (1/4 turn) I can’t get over 5000 RPM. Springs are 150# installed and 380# at .650.

Called Hughes and I was told I probably need more spring, even though I got the springs they said to get. Ones now recommended are 148# installed and something like 480# at .700.

The springs that are on the heads now should be overkill for hydraulic lifters. I’m running 1.6 ratio. Guy at Hughes said it probably wouldn’t do this with 1.5 ratio.

Do you need more spring with 1.6 vs 1.5 rocker ratio?

You dont have them adjusted right. hyd lifters need to be in the center of their travel. you stated .0125...thats 12 and a half thousands of an inch. even if you ment .125 thats only 1/8 of an inch pre load. you need more pre load ( if you dont believe me get out your feeler gauges and look at them. zero lash them and start with at least a 1/2 turn. hopefully your push rods are long enough

I should have mentioned I’ve had them at 1 turn and half turn. Same problem but worse. Johnson HyLift recommends .020-.040”.
