Does anyone know when Chrysler started putting in rear main lip seals on 440’s?

Didn't know they ever did.

I have a 71 & 75 manual and they call for a rope seal in the small blocks and big blocks and even the Hemi in the 71 FSM.

Was there a lip seal in your 440 when you disassembled it? It's possible it could have been replaced before with a lip seal that was included in an aftermarket kit.

The newest engine I dis-assembled was a 84 318 and it still had a rope seal.

I’m thinking you’re correct, probably re-ringed or just replaced the seal, thanks!
